GUNSMITHING SERVICES: 3D Surface machined stock inletting

$400.00

Description

Using the resources of modern manufacturing, we are able to deliver the performance a bedded stock offers along with most of the fit and finish detail work at a considerable cost savings.

History:

In 2012 LRI was contracted to overhaul a large inventory of M24 rifles for a well known security contracting firm.  The rifles were for qualification for the DoS DDM ( Department of State, Defensive Designated Marksman) program at the Tiger Valley Range facility.  The work included our Tier 1 blueprint service, fitting new barrels, and reworking the rifle stocks.

It was readily apparent that some radical measures were needed.  The existing “skin bedding” had almost completely delaminated from the alloy chassis resulting in most of it sticking to the receivers and peeling off during our initial tear down.  We built up a sample of rifles, tested them here, and submitted them to the client for final evaluation.  Once everything was validated, we were given final approval to proceed.  We were later told that graduates of the course had posted the highest recorded scores in the history of the program.

Process:

We begin with highly accurate 3D models of the actual receiver.

Barrel channel surfaces are also created.

Surface machining is using a tool considerably smaller than the shape being created.  With software, the tool is guided to “single point machine” the material into the desired geometry.  This type of machining strategy are what’s used to create many of the complex organic shaped items used every day.

R/H Remington M700 Short Action, LRI M700 profile recoil lug, LRI Bolt handle, and K&P #4 contour barrel channel:

Our process retains the use of stainless steel pillars made in house with the final shape being done after they are installed.

LRI conventional bedding pillar on left, Surface machining pillar on right:

The pillar is 100% in contact with the stock.   To ensure the correct fit, we machine the pillar as part of the inlet simultaneously.  These pillars are threaded into the stock so the risk of them coming loose is eliminated.

Completed inlet being prepped for paint.

Final assembly.
