GUNSMITHING SERVICES: LRI Side bolt release and installation

Description

Our external bolt releases are machined and installed in house.  This “line-of-sight” approach allows us to deliver your project with the fit and finish you expect.  Our side releases are made a little differently than others.  The hole for the pin is slotted to allow energy transfer from the bolt to pass directly to the receiver.  Doing it this way isn’t easy as the slot is created using a 1/16″ diameter endmill.  The benefit is the retention pin is merely along for the ride.  It sees none of the impact force created from rapid bolt manipulation, eliminating the failure point.  The shoe that contacts the bolt lug works on the locked knee idea to almost eliminate the risk of the bolt falling out of the receiver while in the field.  (It’s amazing how many calls we’ve had over the years from folks asking if we have OEM replacement bolts for Tikka actions due to this very thing!)

Our bolt stops are made from tool steel intentionally left softer than the lug of the bolt.  This prevents the stop from peening (distorting) the bolt lug over time and avoids the cascading problems from it.  they are made 1/4″ wide to spread the impact force from years of use over a large contact surface.
