Description
Barrel contouring is a service we offer that will take your existing barrel and turn it to a different outside contour. This is a lathe operation that removes material so we can only make the barrel smaller. Use the drop-down menu to tell us what contour you would like your barrel converted to.
Important notes:
- Fluted barrels can only be recontoured into something smaller than what the flute depth is. The tool in the lathe must be able to cut below the depth at the root (deepest point) of the flute. Otherwise, severe tool chatter is certain, causing the finish to be ruined.
- Contours are limited by caliber as well.
- Example: A 40 caliber (404 Jefferies for instance) will not work on anything smaller than a #2 contour less than 26″.
- Fluted barrels also can only be recontoured into something significantly smaller than the existing barrel.
- Example #1: A fluted M24 can likely be recontoured into something like a #5 target or Remington Varmint. (Although a Rem Varmint uses a 1.250″ diameter cylinder where’s the M24 is 1.200″)
- Example #2: A fluted #3B cannot be recontoured into a #3 as the smaller diameter combined with the flute pattern will result in severe tool chatter.
